Young Men Rise Up party with South Houston High students, a fun filled night of inspiration.

We held our first annual Young Men Rise Up reception with our SHHS students. Our students and parents received inspirational and valuable information from our guest speakers, Precinct 2 Constable Jerry Garcia, Mi Tienda Top Leader Manuel Colunga, Momentum Education’s Raj Salhotra, and Bank of America managers and banker Jose Vargas, Arnie Muñoz and Kenneth Glass. A great time had by all!

Video: The Mighty Trojan Wind Ensemble is hitting all the right notes, dominating competitions left and right. Congratulations!

Congratulations to the Mighty Trojan Wind Ensemble for their scores at the UIL Concert and Sight-Reading competition today. Not only did they score 1’s in both categories with a 1-1-2 in Concert and straight 1’s in Sight-Reading, earlier this year they also scored a 1 at the UIL Marching Competition. We are so proud of all the hard work our students and directors have put in to make this year the best year for band!!!

South Houston High’s Trojan Winter Guard spun, twirled, and danced their way to a fantastic 2nd place finish at the Texas Color Guard Circuit. Congratulations!

Congratulations to the SHHS Trojan Winter Guard for a great performance Saturday at the Texas Color Guard Circuit Contest in Pearland! The guard finished 2nd in their class and we are so proud of them! Way to go Ms. Chapa and the SHHS Guard!

Professor Travis Prokop twirls into the Jannettes’ world, turning a dancer’s dream into reality with a modern masterclass.

On Tuesday, the Jannettes welcomed and had the privilege of taking a modern masterclass from the University of Houston’s professor Travis Prokop!

• Travis is currently an assistant professor of dance at UH and continues to serve the Houston dance community.
• He has also served as a faculty of dance at Lamar University (tenured), Sam Houston State University and Southern Methodist University.
• He has produced local and national works for numerous arts and dance events.
• As a performer, Travis Prokop has been featured on national television for the FOX broadcasting shows So You Think You Can Dance (Season 5) and American Crime (Season 2, Episode 5).
• Professor Prokop has performed nationally and has also performed for various dance companies here in Houston.

During his visit, he did a Q&A with the Jannettes and talked to them about the University of Houston’s dance program, and what all it has to offer, along with scholarship opportunities. We are so grateful for this experience and hope to continue to provide more opportunities like these for our students.

Boots and Bling at the South Houston High Mother Daughter Brunch Experience.

What a special time we had at our annual SHHS Mother Daughter Brunch! This year’s theme was Boots and Bling! Thank you to our presenters from The Bridge who provided helpful information for our mothers and young ladies. A good time was had by all. Mothers and daughters created fans with messages to each other. It was absolutely special!

South Houston High English III students celebrated Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance.

Happy Birthday, Langston Hughes! English III students celebrated the launch of their poetry unit by learning about the life of Langston Hughes and the impact he had on the Harlem Renaissance. In honor of his birthday today, students created music playlists, collages, poems, and house party invitations to gain a deeper understanding of the social, historical, and cultural context of his work.

South Houston’s Aquatics Team paddled fast at District Swimming Championships. Two mates advanced to the Regional meet. Congratulations!

Congratulations to the SHHS Aquatics Team, who competed in the District Swimming Championship. Sophomore Andres Cruz won 1st place in the 200 yd Individual Medley, and will compete in the Regional Meet for the second year in a row on February 9th. Andres also took the bronze medal in the Boys’ 500 yd Freestyle. Navya Karunarathne for placed 5th in the Girls 50 yd Freestyle and 6th in the Girls’ 100 yd Freestyle. She has also advanced to the regional meet!
Congratulations also to to Junior Paulina Moyeda who placed 8th in Girls 50 Yard Freestyle and 9th in Girls 100 Yard Freestyle as well as Sophomore George Gonzalez who placed 11th in Boys 50 Yard Freestyle. Go Trojans!!

South Houston High held their Junior Class Career Fair with over 40 pros to discuss potential career opportunities.

The English Department held their first Junior Class Career Fair on Monday, January 29th. The career fair was a culminating activity that provided real-world application to English III curriculum’s Professional Communications unit. English III students had the opportunity to speak with over 40 professionals, tradespeople, and community members about their careers and gain relevant knowledge about potential career opportunities. A special thanks to all who participated!

South Houston High’s Spanish Club soaks up culture and team spirit at Kemah Boardwalk and Habaneros Restaurant.

The SOHO Spanish club had a blast at Kemah Boardwalk, and our journey continued at Habaneros restaurant in Seabrook, where we immersed ourselves in authentic Mexican flavors and culture. This combined experience played a significant role in fostering strong bonds and boosting our team spirit. Heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this trip!

Exploring space, ESOL 2 students’ adventure at the Houston Planetarium.

After learning about space and exploration for the past 6 weeks, our ESOL 2 students toured the Houston Planetarium today. Filled with excitement and wonder, they learned about our galaxy and the mission to visit space. This experience has provided our students with knowledge, culture, and insights into different career opportunities.

South Houston High got to take a behind the scenes experience at Univision.

On Friday, October 20th students visited the Spanish speaking TV channel Univision Houston. We had a wonderful time!

Ms. Jessica Mendoza, the community empowerment coordinator, welcomed us and gave us a tour of the facilities and different TV and radio studios. We met news anchors Osvaldo Corral and Nathaly Alcala and they talked to the students about their experiences in their careers. We also met Ana Raquel Bueno, environmental reporter; Raul Brindis and Pedro Reyes, popular radio hosts ; and Oscar De La Rosa, one of the members of the musical group “La Mafia”.

The students were very engaged in the activity and also very excited. Some students from Trojan TV made some videos and took pictures. Everyone, including the teachers, enjoyed the trip.
