Short list of events yet devastating a year later.
On May 29, 1889, the Texas Spring Palace opened in Fort Worth. The grand building was an exhibition hall that showcased the best of Texas agriculture and industry. Unfortunately, on May 30, 1890, the palace was destroyed by a tragic fire, ending its short but memorable run.
Another significant event in Texas history occurred on this day in 1939. The State Soil Conservation Board was formed in response to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The board was tasked with implementing state conservation laws and organizing and assisting soil-conservation districts across Texas.
Texas is a state with a rich history and a unique cultural identity. As former Governor Rick Perry once said, “I don’t want to look like Connecticut, no offense, I don’t want to look like Oklahoma, I don’t want to look like California. I want to be uniquely Texas. And that’s not to diss anybody else.”
