On July 21, 2024, Precinct 8 Deputy Rivera with Constable Phil Sandlin’s Office initiated a traffic stop on a speeding vehicle in the 14700 block of the Gulf Freeway. As Deputy Rivera approached the vehicle, he detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. Upon making contact with the driver, Deputy Rivera observed a small child in the vehicle. The driver was identified as 20 year old Eder Alejandro Avila. A check of Avila’s information later revealed an open warrant for Assault Bodily Injury through Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Rivera directed Avila to step out of the vehicle to conduct a further investigation. As Avila exited the vehicle, he attempted to take a backpack he stated was his daughter’s. Deputy Rivera retrieved the backpack and proceeded to conduct a probable cause based search of the vehicle. Deputies located multiple narcotics inside the backpack: 230 grams of Carisoprodol, 166.08 grams of Acetaminophen and Hydrocodone, 106.99 grams of Amphetamine and Dextroamphetamine, 83.1 grams of Oxycodone Hydrochloride and 151.9 grams of Alprazolam. A further search of the vehicle yielded $9,050 in U.S. currency. Deputy Peters and his K-9 partner Duke arrived to assist in the investigation and positively alerted on the contraband.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and accepted a felony charge for Possession with Intent to Deliver and two felony charges for Manufacture/Delivery of Controlled Substance. Avila was transported to the Harris County Joint Processing Center where his bonds were set at a total of $75,000. The Asset Forfeiture division was contacted and accepted the seizure of the U.S. currency.
