Houston Water Safe to Drink

Harmless odor and taste issues pose no risk to the public

Houston Public Works (HPW) is aware of reports regarding changes in the taste and smell of the city’s drinking water. Routine testing shows the water contains naturally occurring compounds like geosmin and MIB (2-methyl isoborneol), which are harmless but can cause a musty or earthy taste and odor.

HPW recommends several options to improve the taste:
• chilling the water or adding ice.
• use a slice or drops of lemon.
• use a carbon filter, such as a Brita filter.

Houston Public Works will continue to answer questions about water quality. Please report any concerns, including taste and odor issues, to 311 via phone (713.837.0311), email ([email protected]), visit houstontx.gov/311, or use the Houston 311 app. This will help map affected areas for a complete resolution.
