Gary Seloff’s enchanting photo captures the elusive least bittern, a master of disguise and stealth on Horsepen Bayou’s shimmering waters.

Gary Seloff’s wonderful photo and description of this least bittern.
“Chopped Liver (Least Bittern); When I move slowly in my kayak, I can often get within a few feet of a Least Bittern feeding or preening on Horsepen Bayou. If the bird becomes concerned about my presence it can step back a few inches into the reeds and completely disappear. But if business interests lead it to another part of the bayou that happens to cross my path, I’m ignored as though I’m not even there. After snagging a few baitfish at the base of the reeds, this female zipped past my right ear as she called out her intentions to a mate lurking a few yards away.”
