DPPD: Safe cycling laws even on Center Street.

Here is the law on bicycles when riding on the roadway:

– you must follow traffic laws, like a motor vehicle

– you must have at least one hand on the handlebars of the bicycle when riding

– you may not carry more persons than the bicycle is designed to carry

– you shall ride only on or astride a permanent and regular seat attached to the bicycle

– the bicycle must be equipped with a brake (you cannot stop the bicycle with your Flintstone feet)

– you shall ride as near as practicable to the right curb or edge of the roadway unless:

1) you are passing a vehicle (which is possible on Center St. since no one is going 40 mph)
2) you are about to make a left-hand turn, or
3) there is a bicycle lane available (like on McDermott)

– at nighttime, the bicycle must be equipped with a white light to the front and a reflector, or red light, to the rear
