LPPD: An accidental shooting leaves one victim injured. Update on victim’s status later.

Updated at 7:51 PM:

Following a series of interviews with involved parties, as well as scene processing, all indications suggest the shooting may have been accidental.

At this time it is believed the adult victim was exiting his workplace for the day and was entering a vehicle with several family members on-board to pick him up.

During this same time, another adult was manipulating a handgun in the back seat of the car, and accidentally discharged the weapon, resulting in the victim being struck in the hip/torso area.

It appears all five (5) parties inside the vehicle were either family members or well-known acquaintances. The individual who discharged the weapon panicked and fled the scene immediately after discharging the weapon. The vehicle has since been secured, and police are obtaining a search warrant for additional processing.

All other persons who were inside of the vehicle are safe at this time. The victim was life-flighted from the scene, and investigators will follow up after emergency surgery procedures are concluded.

Investigators are also pursuing several leads in an attempt to locate the adult who fled the scene. Police do not believe the public is in any danger at this time.
