PPD SWAT tryouts are just the beginning; these officers train daily to turn their skills into seamless, life-saving teamwork on the streets.

A couple weeks ago, we highlighted our SWAT tryouts and the immense undertaking it is to train for and complete that process. The training and effort does not end there though, as that is just the tip of the iceberg in their commitment to this team.

All of a police officer’s skills are perishable without practice and repetition. So, in order to advance and remain a top tier resource for our department, these officers must participate in regularly scheduled training. SWAT officers constantly work to hone their skills in building search, breaching, marksmanship and so much more. There is an expectation to maintain peak levels of physical fitness and mental acuity, study new tactics and advancements in strategy in our profession and learn to work as a cohesive unit.

We have also found over the years, that this knowledge is an applicable resource, even when a situation does not warrant a SWAT callout. Many of these officers work patrol as their regular assignment, so every day they are able to assist in high stress and volatile situations.
