Video: Yin Yang and Waggles, two resilient dogs seeking love and a forever home.

PLEASE HELP US! We’re Yin Yang (Black & White) and Waggles (Black). We arrived at the shelter malnourished, hungry, and barely able to walk 💔. But despite the hardships we’ve faced, we have found strength and comfort in each other through the tough times. The shelter has also taken good care of us and have even offered to cover our in-house heartworm treatments. But we still need a home where we can experience safety, security, and love. Can you open your heart and home to help us? “She loves playing catch with the ball, but sometimes wont give it back to you because she wants you to chase her. She is super playful. She loves belly rubs and when people talk to her like a baby. She likes to run in the yard or just relax in the bed. She loves kids and she enjoys her treats a lot (if we open the pantry which is where her treats are, she will already be sitting down waiting for one). She has 90% mastered potty training.”

It’s about time to protect the pooch from firework fright and avoid animal shelter searches.

We will be closed today in observance of the holiday. We ask that before you head out to celebrate, please make sure to bring your pets inside. Fireworks are very scary for animals, and they will try to escape from them! If you don’t want to spend the 5th of July at shelters looking for your cat or dog, or worse, finding out they had been hit by a car trying to escape the noise, setting them up inside your home will ensure that they cannot leave your yard.

If your dog or cat does escape your yard, we will reopen on Wednesday at 9am (11am for adoptions). Post on NextDoor, Facebook, Pawboost, etc. as soon as you notice they’re missing, and then come to the shelter to see if they made it here. Every shelter is full, so we want to make sure they get home as soon as possible!

Animal Shelter pro tip: Is the dog smiling or aggressive?

Have you ever seen a prettier smile? Mona Lisa got her name while here at the shelter because she would always “smile” when she saw one of us.

By looking at Mona Lisa’s adoption picture, it’s a bit hard to tell what the bared teeth is about. Is she scared? Is she being aggressive? Or is she “smiling?”

We wanted to post this picture, not only because we all adore Mona Lisa and are so happy she found her furever home, but because we think it’s important to know how to read a dog’s body language.

If you saw this same scene in person, you would not only see the bared teeth, but also the wiggly body and wagging tail. Her ears are back and flattened. This is usually a more submissive posture, and she is trying to show you that she is not a threat.

Growling, raised hair on her back, tail that is straight and stiff, tucked between the legs, or held high above the dog’s back, whale eyes (where the dog’s eyes show a lot of white because she’s turning her head away but still looking at you), stiff body, and intense eye contact in addition to the bared teeth would all be signs that she is telling you to back off.

It is important for you to know when a dog is okay and when you need to back off. Not every dog baring her teeth is being aggressive; however, not every dog baring her teeth is “smiling.” You have to look at the whole body. Being able to read a dog’s body language can possibly prevent bites. Most of them will warn you; you just have to understand their language.

The Animal Shelter has seen an increase of parvo cases and shut down for a bit to clear it up.

🚨PARVO ALERT🚨

As we head into the warmer Spring/Summer months, we are seeing an increase of Parvovirus at the Pasadena Animal Adoption Center (commonly known as “parvo”). Unfortunately, because of this, the Center will be closed effective immediately until Monday, May 1st.

All of our dogs housed at the Pasadena Animal Adoption Center are currently in quarantine due to the exposure. In an effort to avoid possibly spreading the virus, we will be closed for walk-in adoptions. Dogs who have not been recently housed in our facilities and are currently in foster homes or are with boarding partners will still be available for adoption. We will also be closed for all stray and owner-surrender intakes. Please note that the Pasadena Animal Shelter building is still closed due to the damage caused by the tornado on January 24, 2023.

Parvovirus is a very contagious illness spread through the feces and saliva of infected dogs. Unvaccinated dogs, especially puppies, are most vulnerable. Parvovirus can survive in the soil for up to a year where an infected dog went to the bathroom, so it is important to not let your unvaccinated dog/puppy walk on public grassy areas or in dog parks. The best way to protect your pet is by making sure he or she is vaccinated against Parvovirus. These vaccinations are available through your vet or mobile vaccine clinics.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the closure of our facility. If you have an animal you need to rehome or turn in as stray, please give us a call at 713-848-5430, and we’ll be glad to talk to you about resources available to you.

Cuddlebug Hollie is retired looking for a good family to call her own. Bags packed. Shelter opens at 11am

Are you looking for a calm cuddlebug to take slow strolls with? Then, look no further than this 8-year-old beauty! Hollie (A164240) came in with two small dogs who left the shelter quickly, but Hollie stayed for a little longer. Fortunately, some awesome people stepped up to take her into their home until she found her furever home 🥰 #fosteringsaveslives Her fosters say that she is seriously so easy, submissive, respectful, and amazing. She still has some spunk in her and would probably enjoy a family! She and her foster sibling sweetly share food, bed, toys, and humans ❤ Hollie’s adoption fee is waived through March 31st for Bark Madness, and she will be spayed as well as receive a microchip and a rabies vaccine. If you are interested in Hollie, please complete our online application, and one of our Adoption Counselors will contact you to make an appointment for the foster to bring her to meet you. https://www.pasadenatx.gov/FormCenter/Animal-Adoption-and-Foster-Applications-10 Pasadena Adoption Center

Animal Shelter’s fixing to have Olive’s leg cut off and hims needs a quiet place to recover.

This cutie with the 2 different colored eyes is Olive (A164026) 😍 He is a 7-month-old Lab mix who came in with an injured back leg and needs a leg amputation. We are ready to send him to the vet to have the surgery, but he really needs a foster or adopter, so that he can heal in a quiet, stress-free environment. We will pay for the surgery; he just needs your TLC ❤

Animals with legs amputated adapt really well to the limb loss, so if you’re concerned about his quality-of-life post-surgery, you have nothing to worry about! This will actually make his life easier and better because he won’t be in pain. He will be just as great a pet as any four-legged dog!

Olive’s adoption fee is waived for the Bark Madness event, and in addition to the leg amputation, he will be neutered, receive a rabies vaccine, and have a microchip implanted. If you are interested in adopting, please complete the application at https://www.pasadenatx.gov/509/Deciding-to-Adopt. For questions, please email [email protected].

If you’re not ready to adopt but would like to foster him during his recovery period, please complete the application at https://www.pasadenatx.gov/FormCenter/Animal-Adoption-and-Foster-Applications-10. For questions, please email [email protected].

Howie came into the Animal Shelter pretty rough looking. Check out his after pictures.

This guy right here is one reason why fostering is so important. Howie (A162183) came in a complete mess. He was so sweet but had a horrible skin infection. We started treating him here, but it was once he went in to foster that he became completely unrecognizable, for the better! Being able to heal in a quiet, stress-free environment is key and turned him from a balding, stinky mess into this handsome fella with gorgeous, shiny fur 😍🥰 Howie is available for adoption, so if you’re interested, please complete the application and one of our Adoption Counselors will contact you to schedule an appointment to meet him. https://www.pasadenatx.gov/FormCenter/Animal-Adoption-and-Foster-Applications-10 Howie is neutered, has his rabies vaccine, and a microchip, and his adoption fee is waived through March 31st for the Bark Madness event. Foster Friday is high energy lover Abigail.

It’s Foster Friday, so check out sweet Abigail who is currently in foster (A163679) 😍🥰 This is what her foster has to say about her: “She loves attention, she is laid back for the most part. She plays for a little while when she is excited but also loves her sleep. (And she snores 😄). She is house trained but doesn’t ask to go out, we just periodically take her out. Super loving!” She also says that her idea of playing is basically rolling around (so cute!) and will play with toys a little. She is great with her teenaged son but have not had her around small children. Abigail is spayed, has her rabies vaccine, and a microchip, and her adoption fee is waived through March 31st for Bark Madness! If you’re interested in meeting Abigail, please complete the application, and one of our Adoption Counselors will contact you to schedule a time for you to come meet her. https://www.pasadenatx.gov/FormCenter/Animal-Adoption-and-Foster-Applications-10 Pasadena Adoption Center

The Animal Shelter is looking for a name for a handsome tan and white little guy.

Sun’s out, tongues out 🐶 It’s a beautiful day, and these 3 cuties got some play group time in the play yard today 🌞 The handsome tan and white little guy doesn’t have a name yet, so if you’re interested in him, please ask for A164005. He’s a 6-month-old APBT mix and is reported to be smart, knows sit, and loves dogs! The gray beauty is Dahlia (A164314). She’s an 8-month-old APBT mix and is super smart. She knows sit and is very treat-motivated. The black and tan gentleman doesn’t have a name either, so you will need to ask for A164327. He is an 8-month-old German Shepherd mix and is very sweet. He also loves water! These puppies had such a fun time playing together today! We just know that they would be great choices for anyone looking for a puppy to love ❤️ Adoption fees are currently waived for Bark Madness through March 31st! Pasadena Adoption Center
