Take a bus trip with the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library to Brookshire, Texas. There you will find the Hemi Hideout, the largest timber structure in Texas housing John Hovas’ collective of Dodge and Plymouth muscle cars, plus one of the largest collections of neon signs, all from days gone by. Browse many other pieces of memorabilia, antique tractors and motorcycles, and then go out to eat at Brookwood Community, a nonprofit residential and vocational community for adults with disabilities, before returning to the library at 2 p.m. The bus leaves the Central Library at 8:00 a.m (Front Parking Lot). In 1971, astronaut Alan Shepard returned from the moon and after being released from quarantine, immediately went to get a haircut. He gave his barber, Carlos Villagomez, an autographed golf ball. During his Apollo 14 moonwalk just days earlier, Shepard had conducted a world-famous demonstration of gravity by hitting a golf ball on the moon. Was the golf ball he gave to Mr. Villagomez on the moon? What prompted him to give the unique gift to his barber? Learn the inside story from Barbara Radnofsky and Ed Supkis, whose parents worked in the Crew Systems Division at NASA during the Apollo missions. Authors Barbara Radnofsky and Ed Supkis both grew up amongst family friends who worked in the NASA Crew Systems Division in the 1960s and 70s. In fact, Barbara’s father was chief of the division and was part of the team locked in a room with the same materials on board Apollo 13 to help the astronauts fix the problem with carbon dioxide scrubbers depicted in the movie.
Come and hear from them about early space travel with a focus on family and friends, especially the friendship between Alan Shepard and close family friend and barber Carlos Villagomez and the golf ball the astronaut gave him immediately after hitting a ball on the moon and returning to earth.
