Precinct 8 Deputy Rivera’s traffic stop led to the smell of wacky tobacky which led to a stash of narcotics.

On Saturday, December 23, 2023, Precinct 8 Deputy Rivera with Constable Phil Sandlin’s Office received an alert of a prohibited vehicle while patrolling the 1500 block of the E Sam Houston Pkwy N. Deputy Rivera located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in the 3500 block of Pasadena Freeway.

Upon contact with the vehicle, Deputy Rivera detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. The driver was identified as 18 year old Joeangel Garza and the passenger was identified as a 16 year old female juvenile. Deputy Rivera conducted a probable cause based search of the vehicle and located 8.9 grams of alprazolam, 5.02 ounces of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and accepted felony charges for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Marijuana. Garza was transported to the Harris County Joint Processing Center where his bonds were set at $4,000 total.
