School is out, kids are out and about. Precinct 8 has some tips for humans.

Summer break is among us! This is an especially busy time when many kids are playing at the park, walking to meet friends or taking their bikes to the pool. As we all enjoy the summer months, we wanted to share important safety reminders for drivers and pedestrians. Parents can help by reminding their children about staying safe on the roads.

PEDESTRIANS:
• Use sidewalk when available.
• If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the roadway facing oncoming traffic.
• Always cross at intersections or marked crosswalks.
• Look in both directions before proceeding to cross a street
• Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. Never assume a driver sees you.
• Watch for cars that are backing out of a driveway or parking space.

DRIVERS:
• Reduce speed when approaching crosswalks.
• Stop for pedestrians.
• Yield the right of way to pedestrians when turning.
• Stay alert and minimize distractions.
• Double check behind you and around your vehicle when backing out of a driveway or parking space.
