Al Campo’s athletic journey started with success in basketball at Pasadena, followed by an outstanding senior year on the baseball diamond, earning all-district honors and boasting a remarkable .410 batting average. At the University of Houston, he excelled as a shortstop, achieving a notable .361 batting average his senior year. Transitioning to coaching, Campo led Sam Rayburn’s baseball teams to championships in 1977, 1984, and 1985, making it to the state tournament in the latter year. Despite falling short in the state title game, he was recognized as the All-Greater Houston coach of the year. Campo later served as the head football coach at South Houston High from 2001-2006, leaving a lasting legacy.
