PISD remembers Victoria “Vickie” Morgan’s legacy as Pasadena ISD’s first female board member is a vibrant tapestry of dedication, mentorship, and tireless advocacy for education. R.I.P.

Pasadena ISD Remembers Victoria “Vickie” Morgan: A Trailblazer and Advocate
Pasadena, TX – The Pasadena Independent School District is mourning the loss of a historic figure and beloved leader, Board Member Victoria “Vickie” Morgan, whose remarkable 39-year tenure left an indelible mark on our community.

Elected in 1986, Morgan broke barriers as the first woman to serve on the Pasadena ISD Board of Trustees. From her beginnings as a homeroom mom at her three daughter’s elementary schools, she rose to become one of the district’s most dedicated public servants, holding the Place 7 seat for nearly four decades.

During her 12 terms, Morgan helped the district achieve significant milestones. Under her guidance, the Board earned TASA/TASB Honor Board recognition four times, a testament to her commitment to excellence.

Spanning five decades, two centuries, and two millennia, Morgan’s tenure was extraordinary. She worked alongside 23 fellow board members, collaborated with five superintendents, and cast pivotal votes to hire four of them. Over the years, she served as a board officer for 27 years, including eight terms as President, nine as Vice President, and five each as Secretary and Assistant Secretary.

A Visionary Leader for Education
Superintendent Dr. DeeAnn Powell expressed the depth of the district’s loss: “Our hearts are broken. Vickie was the epitome of service and dedication, a model board member who championed countless programs that improved education for all students.”

Board President Casey Phelan echoed those sentiments, “While we grieve her passing, we also celebrate her extraordinary life—a life defined by mentorship, advocacy, and a relentless focus on putting children first. Pasadena ISD is forever changed for the better because of her leadership.”

Former Superintendent Dr. Kirk Lewis said, “Vickie’s influence was both personal and professional. She was my friend and a driving force in so many programs and decisions throughout the years. She was consistently guided by her heart and her passion for doing what was right for each and every student. I will miss her words of wisdom. Pasadena ISD has lost an amazing champion.”

Morgan herself reflected on the evolution of education in a 2011 interview, “I’ve seen a tremendous shift in how instruction is delivered, moving from traditional lectures to hands-on learning and incorporating technology to engage students more effectively.”

Her unwavering advocacy extended beyond academics. Morgan championed initiatives to promote student well-being, particularly efforts to raise awareness about bullying and fostering a safer, more inclusive environment for all children.

A Legacy That Endures
“There will never be another Vickie Morgan,” Dr. Powell said. “She was truly in a league of her own. As we offer condolences to her family, we also grieve as her extended family in Pasadena ISD. She was a part of us, and her loss is immeasurable.”

Morgan’s legacy is one of trailblazing leadership, passionate advocacy, and selfless service. Her impact will continue to resonate through the generations of students, educators, and community members she inspired. Our thoughts and prayers are with her husband, Bill and her daughters, Stephanie and Cheri, and the entire Morgan family.

Brace yourselves Texans. The final exam heads your way this week, with online tests.

Next week we will be on a final exam schedule from Tuesday-Thursday. All students should bring their device and charger, as well as charge their tablets at home every night as all tests are online. Students with off periods should take special note of the schedule to determine which days they will need to come earlier or stay later than usual. For example, students with 7th period off might need to stay later than normal on Tuesday if they have a test in 6th period and need the whole time to finish it, but will be able to leave at 12:30 on Wednesday. Students should talk to the teachers of those subjects to determine if they will have a final or not. There are no exemptions for these finals.

Thank you Texas High School Welding Series for spotlighting Sasha, we are so proud of her!
Meet Sashaly “Sasha” Davis, a remarkable student in the PMHS Welding program and the focus of this month’s TXHSWS Student Spotlight!
Sashaly “Sasha” Davis shines as a remarkable young woman with an upbeat spirit and a dedication to everything she takes on. A full-time welding student at PMHS Welding, she’s quick to learn and has risen through the ranks impressively. Alongside her academic commitments, Sasha works full-time as part of the athletic training staff. She’s a familiar face in the summer and fall, spending long hours with the football team, assisting with their workouts and handling essential training responsibilities.
Sasha’s resilience and calmness in high-pressure situations were recently highlighted at a welding competition when she helped a fellow student who suffered a knee dislocation. Despite the challenging scenario, she listened to his guidance and managed to help relocate his knee, allowing him to recover quickly.
After graduation, Sasha plans to serve her country by enlisting in the U.S. Military, a goal she approaches with pride and purpose. It’s been an honor working with her, and with dedicated individuals like Sasha, I’m confident our nation’s future is in capable hands.

Dobie High mourns the passing of Marie Flickinger, a fierce champion for the South Belt community.

Today, Dobie High School mourns the loss of a pivotal figure in our community, Marie Flickinger. She was the co-founder of the South Belt-Ellington Leader, a weekly newspaper dedicated to covering local news, including Little League baseball, soccer, and football. Many Dobie High School students were recognized in this publication.

More importantly, Mrs. Flickinger was a staunch advocate for the underdog and for the South Belt community. She actively supported numerous initiatives at Dobie High School and served as a powerful voice whenever the school faced challenges. Her dedication extended to several principals from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and the present. However, perhaps her most significant contribution was ensuring that the South Belt community recognized the achievements of all of Dobie’s feeder schools and highlighted the accomplishments of Dobie High School students in her stories.

Each year, the Arnold & Itkin LLP Foundation invites students from Houston Area Elementary schools to participate in our RESPECT Contest. Students are asked to define the word “respect” in two sentences or less and draw a picture to complement their explanation. The Arnold & Itkin Foundation reviews every entry, and the winning students receive a donation to their school, a contribution to the charity of their choice, and a cash prize for themselves.

This year, three students from De Zavala MS, Milstead MS, and Bobby Shaw MS were recognized at the Harris County Civil Courthouse. Pasadena Independent School District

Rayburn parents, you know who you are. Do better.

Parents, we need your help. We are seeing a lot of students being dropped off late to school, causing them to miss important instruction. If you drop your student off, please make sure you are getting here early enough to give them time to get to class by the 7:15 tardy bell. If they are more than 10 minutes late to class they will be marked absent. If this happens more than 10% of the time (~8 days) your student will start accruing make up time, and could be denied credit for the class, putting them off track for graduation. Doors open for students at 6:45, giving them plenty of time to eat breakfast and get to class on time. Remember, all PISD students get free breakfast and lunch this year. Thank you for your help and support in this matter, please let us know if you have any questions.
