The Pasadena Independent School District (ISD) Board of Trustees, unanimously, named Pasadena ISD Deputy Superintendent Dr. Toni Lopez as Pasadena ISDโs Superintendent. Dr. Lopez will replace Superintendent Dr. DeeAnn Powell who is retiring and will take on the role of Superintendent Emeritus until her official retirement date.
Before a packed board room, Pasadena ISD Board President Casey Phelan stated the Board has followed a lengthy process in choosing Lopez as the Superintendent.

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Jay Hunt. Jay has been a part of our association for many years; in the most recent years he has been in the role of President and Chairman of the Board. Jay’s emotional prayers and infectious laugh is something we will all miss.
Jay impacted the lives of many volunteers throughout his years with PLS&R. Our prayers go out to his beautiful wife, Kim, and their entire family.
We ask that everyone say a prayer for comfort as his family navigates through these difficult times in the coming days.
March 2, 1836: On this day, a pivotal event unfolded that holds deep significance for both Texans and Americans: Texas declared its independence from Mexico. This moment marked a turning point in history, profoundly shaping the destinies of Texas, the United States, and the world.
For Texians, March 2, 1836, represented the birth of their Republic. On this day, delegates gathered at the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the Brazos and formally adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence. This bold act asserted their right to self-governance, breaking free from Mexican rule amid escalating tensions during the Texas Revolution. The declaration was a unifying call to action, galvanizing Texian settlersโmany of whom were Americans who had migrated to the regionโin their fight for sovereignty. Just weeks later, on April 21,1836, this resolve led to their decisive victory over Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto. Within hours of that victory, General Santa Anna was captured on land that was located in what is now Pasadena, Texas.
The site later became part of the Champion Paper Mill complex.
There is today a historical marker commemorating Santa Annaโs capture, and I encourage you to go visit it this month in honor of our Independence. Thus, March 2, 1836, stands as the moment when Texas began its journey as an independent nation, a source of pride and identity for Texans to this day. On a personal note of pride, my great, great, great, great grandfather, Thomas Phinley Plaster, manned the twin sister cannons at the Battle of San Jacinto. He was given land by Sam Houston and was one of the first Texas state legislators. He was the door guard at the Capital the year he passed, and he is buried in the State of Texas Cemetery. While the declaration was being signed, the Battle of the Alamo, February 23, 1836 to March 6, 1836, was unfolding in San Antonio. The Alamo’s fall on March 6, 1836, just days later, became a rallying cry for Texian forces, amplifying the declaration’s impact.
Here are important dates and facts in Texas history: On March 2, 1836, delegates from various Texas settlements convened at Washington-on-the Brazos and unanimously adopted the Texas Declaration of Independence. This document was modeled after the United States Declaration of Independence and was signed by 59 delegates, including figures like Sam Houston, a military leader and later the first president of the Republic of Texas. Lorenzo de Zavala, a Mexican statesmen who supported the Texian cause and became the Republic’s first vice-president. George Childress, the primary author of the declaration. This act formally declared Texas an independent nation, the Republic of Texas, although the fight for independence was not over.
The events of March 2, 1836, were a culmination of growing tensions between the American settlers in Texas (known as Texians) and the Mexican government. The Republic of Texas existed from 1836 to 1845. This paved the way for the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, where Sam Houston’s forces defeated Santa Anna’s army, securing Texas independence. After nearly a decade as an independent republic, Texas was annexed by the United States in 1845, becoming the 28th state. This annexation escalated tensions between the U.S. and Mexico, contributing to the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), which reshaped the American Southwest and led to the famous westward expansion of the United States.
March 2, 1836, was a defining moment in Texas and U.S. history.

Take a bus trip with the Friends of the Pasadena Public Library to Brookshire, Texas. There you will find the Hemi Hideout, the largest timber structure in Texas housing John Hovas’ collective of Dodge and Plymouth muscle cars, plus one of the largest collections of neon signs, all from days gone by. Browse many other pieces of memorabilia, antique tractors and motorcycles, and then go out to eat at Brookwood Community, a nonprofit residential and vocational community for adults with disabilities, before returning to the library at 2 p.m. The bus leaves the Central Library at 8:00 a.m (Front Parking Lot). They had a box lunch catered by the Chamber of Commerce, and the President of the Historical Society, Mrs. Carol Arnold, answered all their questions and gave the tour. Did you know that Dr. Robert Boyd was a Doctor in Pasadena during the early 1900s? He had his office at the corner of Main and 1st Streets (now known as Eagle). Dr. Boyd made house calls to the residents of Pasadena, and when you tour the museum, you can see many items that his family donated. Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming these lovely ladies, proud descendants of Dr. Boyd, who came to tour the museum. Hearing their stories about Dr. Boyd and their ancestors who contributed to building Pasadena was a joy. These ladies meet every other Wednesday for special field trips or lunches, and I am thrilled that they are all going to start volunteering here at the museum. Together, we will be working on a new exhibit dedicated to Dr. Boyd, alongside family members. We will keep you updated when the exhibit is ready for tours. The warm weather events are headed our way! Letโs start planning them with our 3rd annual PLS&R Sporting Clay Event that will be held March 28th at the American Shooting Centers in Houston. This is a family-oriented event where gun safety and fun are both KEY!

All ages will enjoy this concert with entertainer, composer of songs for all ages, and world class bayan player Stas Venglevski. The bayan is similar to an accordion, with buttons instead of keys to provide greater range. Stas Venglevski has been entertaining audiences since his youth in Moldova, where he was two time national competition winner. He regular plays as a soloist with symphony orchestras across the United States and Europe, on national TV and radio programs, and will be at the Pasadena Central Library for a free concert on Monday, February 17 at 6 p.m.! I keep calling out for help, but it feels like no one can hear me…
Iโm Zamboni and I’m known to be kid-friendly, dog-friendly and sweet but the truth is, Iโm really struggling here in the shelter. The unfamiliar faces, the noise, the constant hustle and bustle… itโs all so overwhelming. I just want to be in a warm, cozy home, surrounded by love, where I can finally feel safe.
But now, Iโm on the Urgent List, and time is running out. The stress is taking its toll, and I donโt know how much longer I can hang on like this. I keep hoping, keep wishing that someone will see me, truly see me, and take me out of here.

These Pasadena Memorial High School students loved decorating the homes and packing away all 10 Christmas trees we had displayed over the Christmas season. โก๏ธ Our handsome boy Simon recently went on a Doggie Date. Check out what his lucky dater had to say:
“Simon is a gentle giant who’s very submissive! He’s amazing with people, kids, and appears potty trained. We took Simon for a walk on a secluded trail. We picked it because we know he can be a bit more nervous at first. Simon is very handler oriented! We did trust and confidence building exercises with him by using treats and praise.
Simon would benefit in a home with an owner who can continue to help him come out of his shell. He walked well on a leash, and with some encouragement, he passed by occasional people and dogs with no problem. After walking, we went fishing and he cuddled up and sat on the grass for an hour with no problem. He was nervous when we loaded him into the car but was fine with being picked up to be put in. Overall he’s a great dog who deserves a great home!”

๐ What IS that thing?!?! ๐ The City of Pasadena Office of Emergency Management is updating and expanding our emergency siren system to better serve our residents. These sirens are designed to cover the ENTIRE 60+ square mile footprint Pasadena. The sound will alert citizens to shelter in place during HAZMAT incidents or weather events, such as tornados. The cities of Pasadena, Deer Park and LaPorte all test our sirens at the same time, each Saturday at Noon. By volunteering, youโll not only be part of a Pasadena tradition but also make a real impact on our community.
