Video: PPD Cadets revved up their skills at the Professional Police Driving Course, putting the pedal to the metal.

Last week, cadets participated in the Professional Police Driving Course. They spent several hours in the classroom learning about emergency vehicle operations, including pursuit driving. Topics discussed included department policy, state law, and case laws related to police driving.

Following the classroom sessions, they proceeded to the police academy driving track to implement their newfound knowledge. This hands-on portion included navigating various cone courses, executing high-speed maneuvers, and practicing pursuit driving techniques.

While many patrol officers consider their vehicle their “mobile office,” this course is vital to teaching cadets how to maneuver a police unit safely and efficiently.

Deputy Gossett with Precinct 8 busted an Max sniffed out Sammy the 🤡 for multiple charges. Sammy’s in trouble.

On July 5, 2024 at approximately 3:47 PM, Precinct 8 Deputy Gossett with Constable Phil Sandlin’s Office observed a blue GMC Denali traveling in the 8700 block of Galveston Rd. A check of the registration revealed the license plate belonged to a white GMC pickup.

Deputy Gossett initiated a traffic stop and upon contact with the driver, detected the odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. The driver was identified as 19 year old Sammy Saldivar Jr. Deputy Gossett conducted a probable cause search of the vehicle and located 35.5 grams of marijuana, a handgun, drug paraphernalia and a large sum of U.S. currency. Upon investigation, it was revealed the vehicle displayed fictitious license plate, VIN and registration sticker. A further check of the vehicle’s information confirmed the vehicle was reported stolen through Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Rabago and his K-9 partner Max arrived to assist in the investigation and positively alerted on the contraband.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and accepted Unauthorized Use of Vehicle, Unlawful Carry of Weapon and Possession of Marijuana. Saldivar was transported to the Harris County Joint Processing Center where his bonds were set at a total of $1,200. The Asset Forfeiture division was contacted and accepted the seizure of the U.S. currency.

LPPD beware of home improvement scams on the rise after Beryl.

Beware –
Home improvement/repair scams become more frequent following Hurricanes.

As we recover from the effects of Hurricane Beryl, the La Porte Police Department is reaching out to residents and reminding them to remain alert and do their homework in checking the references and reliability of both interior and exterior home improvement contractors before entering into any type of a work agreement.

Contractor scams such as fencing upgrades, roof repair, and driveway paving are common along the Gulf Coast, particularly following major storms. That’s where unlicensed and the occasional out-of-town contractors find an avenue to march right in. Their crimes, frequently referred to as “scams”, are usually committed by organized groups of people migrating into the area from other parts of Texas or out of state.

When choosing any type of contractor or before having any type of work performed, insist on a written, detailed contract and ensure it contains the contractor’s registration number, insurance information, address, start and completion dates of the job, total amount to be paid, and a list of specifications and materials. Also, make sure your contractor applies for and obtains any applicable building permits. Regardless of the scenario, if you feel you are being scammed in any way, please call the police department immediately at 281-471-2141.

Members of Precinct 8 attended the funeral service for fallen Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Fernando Esqueda earlier today. It is very clear to all who never had the privilege of meeting him that he was truly a great man. For him to be taken in such a cowardly way has left a hole in the hearts of his family, fellow law enforcement officers and his many friends that will never be filled. Our thoughts continue to be with his family and the entire Harris County Sheriff’s Office during this unimaginable and difficult time. Thank you for your service Deputy Esqueda. Avoid any more close calls like the one Precinct 8’s Deputy Jenkins had to handle.

Yesterday, Precinct 8 Deputy Jenkins rescued stranded motorists after they attempted to drive through a flooded roadway in the 500 block of Red Bluff Rd. Deputy Jenkins was able to pull the driver of the black sedan to safety moments before the rising floodwaters reached the windows.

Please pay attention to the weather in the coming days as storms are predicted for our area. Remember that your safety comes first.

❗️Never drive through flooded roads. Just 12 inches of water can carry away most cars.
❗️Avoid walking through floodwaters. It only takes 6 inches of fast-moving water to knock over an adult.
❗️Find alternative routes. Even if it delays you, it’s not worth the risk.

Crews are tackling the storm debris keep hydrants clear for safety.

We know you want the storm debris gone. 😖We do too, and our teams are working on it. 🌳
🚨Please remember that placing vegetative storm debris or any kind of trash on or around fire hydrants is a safety hazard.
🚒Our firetrucks cannot see the hydrants if they are covered. In addition, the hydrants could be damaged by the huge sanitation picker trucks if the claw hits them during debris pick up.
Thank you for your cooperation and amazing patience during this recovery.

In her 100+ days as a foster pup, Sky has shown how sweet, playful, and loving she can be. Yet here we are without a forever home.

We can’t believe Sky has been in a foster home for over 100 days! 😲

While being fostered, she has made quite the impression. Check out what her foster family said about her:

“Sky is the sweetest, most playful pup you’ll ever meet! With a heart as big as her wagging tail, Sky adores squeaky toys and bones like they’re pure treasures. She loves to be outside, rain or shine, and is at her happiest when she’s running wild in an open field. When not nestled in a cozy corner with her favorite plushie or gnawing on a tasty bone, Sky seeks comfort in cuddles and gentle pats.

She is very timid at first, but once she warms up to you, she’s by your side forever. Sky would never hurt a fly, and her gentle demeanor and loving blue eyes make her a friend to anyone willing to share a bit of kindness and patience. I’m positive that her eyes tell a story I’ve been lucky enough to read!

Despite her shyness, Sky’s playful spirit shines through when she hops/gallops around when you come home from a long day, and her sweetness is apparent when she goes in for a big hug. She loves dog treats of all kind and is extremely intelligent. With only a few days of “sit” and “shake” training, she’s mastered these commands. We are now working on “come”, “place”, and more. Also, Sky is also close to being completely potty trained.

She loves to please and is very aware of her surroundings. She also does well around children of all ages. She would make a great addition to anyone’s home, but preferably a female household with another furry companion!”

➡️ Want to meet Sky? Contact us today and adopt for just $7!

The Pasadena Police Fitness Team rocked the Popsicle Dash 5k, promoting wellness for mind, body, and spirit.

This past Saturday, the Pasadena Police Department’s Fitness Team ran in the Karbach Brewing Co.’s Popsicle Dash 5k. The Pasadena Police Department prioritizes our personnel’s overall health, and the Fitness Team is just one of many ideas the Resiliency and Mentorship Program (RAMP) is implementing. The R.A.M.P. program is built around the five pillars of wellness. (mental, physical, social, financial, and spiritual)

By building a team to participate in local 5ks and fitness challenges, we are helping to build on the foundations of mental, physical, and social resiliency. Everyone runs at their own pace but celebrates their accomplishment together at the end! More races are on the horizon, and all P.P.D. employees are encouraged to participate.

Congrats to everyone who completed this 5k; Officers S. Benge, E. Gonzalez, and S. Mata; Sgt. D. Franklund, Sgt. A. Ontiveros, Lt. K. Bowman; Academy Coordinator A. Sanchez; PSO B. Rosales; and Record’s Clerk S. Sanchez. Next, the team will run the Watermelon Dash in August!

PPD Academy’s hard work paid off with an 87% increase in Police Academy applicants, reflecting the power of teamwork.

We are excited to announce a fantastic turnout due to the efforts of the Academy staff and members throughout the department!

We saw an overall increase of 87% in applicants for our Police Academy who passed the Civil Service and P.T. Tests. Not only did the passing rate increase, but our number of applicants increased from 648 in 2023 to 814 in 2024, a 25% increase!

This success reflects the growth our organization can experience by working together as a team, communicating effectively, and maintaining a positive attitude. It is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Academy staff and many members of the Police Department. Personnel attended off-site recruiting events, organized rowing seminars and open houses, and created media for the public explaining the process, benefits, and long-term fulfillment of becoming a PPD cadet.

We will continue implementing unique events and ideas to maintain this increase and add to our team that proudly protects and serves the City of Pasadena, Texas.

PPD: Show appreciation for our dedicated line workers, who brave risks to restore power.

Experiencing a power outage lasting several days can be challenging and stressful. However, maintaining calm and managing stress is essential to ensure everyone’s safety.

We must understand that our line workers (utility workers) are working non-stop to restore the power in our community. Some have traveled away from their families across state lines to help our community return to normalcy.

Their work already involves significant risks, including high-voltage electricity, working at heights, and handling heavy equipment. People in the community threatening or interfering only delays power restoration to those who need it. Ensuring their safety and security is paramount for operational continuity.

The Pasadena Police Department is committed to supporting and ensuring the safety of our line workers. We will take action against anyone who threatens their safety or interferes with their duties.

🚛City of Pasadena sanitation crews and Frontier Waste will continue their regular routes.

🌳Moving forward…please do not use black trash bags for larger tree limbs, branches or shrubbery, this prevents debris removal contractors from identifying debris.

🍃However, smaller debris such as leaves or small twigs may be bagged and placed with your residential trash. Please place larger items in a separate pile on its own.

🆘When placing your trash and storm debris at the curb please separate your waste into the following 3 piles:
1. Tree limbs, branches and other shrubbery
2. Heavy trash
3. Regular trash and/or recycling

🌀Storm recovery can be a gradual process, but we are confident that our community will continue to come together as we have always done. Thank you in advance for your cooperation understanding and patience.

PPD honors Officer J.D. Ginn, who bravely gave his life in service to his community. His legacy will forever inspire us.

In Remembrance of Officer J.D. Ginn:

On July 10, 1991, Pasadena Police Motorcycle Officer J.D. Ginn responded to a residence after observing smoke billowing from a fenced-in backyard. The mentally disturbed homeowner confronted Officer Ginn, and during an exchange of gunfire, Officer Ginn was shot and killed in the line of duty. He was 29 years of age.

We will always remember Officer Ginn’s ultimate sacrifice to uphold the Oath he swore to protect and serve his community. We tragically lost Officer Ginn 33 years ago today, and although he is gone, he will never be forgotten.

Please keep his family, friends, and co-workers in your thoughts and prayers today as we remember the courageous life he lived.

DPPD: Hurricane Beryl category 2 threat to Texas coast – Citizen advisory and evacuation Information.

Hurricane Beryl is expected to make landfall as a Category 2 storm on the Texas coast early Monday. Residents in the area are advised to prepare for storm surge flooding, damaging winds, heavy rain, and potential power outages. Evacuations may be necessary, and it is important to follow‼️⚠️Citizen Advisory – Hurricane Beryl: ⚠️‼️
Beryl is strengthening to a likely Category 2 at landfall on Texas coast early Monday.
There is still a danger of storm surge flooding, damaging winds, heavy rain, and flash flooding.
Even though Deer Park isn’t in the direct cone of the hurricane, we are encouraging you to prepare now. All of your storm preparations need to be completed before dark. Wide spread power outages are possible.

EVACUATIONS:
Follow the advice of local officials.

OTHER PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION:
– Now is the time to complete all preparations to protect life and
property in accordance with your emergency plan. Ensure you are in a
safe location before the onset of strong winds or possible flooding.

– Keep cell phones well charged. Cell phone chargers for automobiles
can be helpful, but be aware of your risk for deadly carbon monoxide
poisoning if your car is left idling in a garage or other poorly
ventilated area.

– It is important to remain calm, informed, and focused during an
emergency. Be patient and helpful with those you encounter.

– If you are a visitor, be sure to know the name of the city or town in
which you are staying and the name of the county or parish in which
it resides. Listen for these locations in local news updates. Pay
attention for instructions from local authorities.

– Rapidly rising flood waters are deadly. If you are in a flood-prone
area, consider moving to higher ground. Never drive through a flooded
roadway. Remember, turn around don’t drown!

– Closely monitor weather.gov, NOAA Weather radio or local news outlets
for official storm information. Be ready to adapt to possible changes
to the forecast. Ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather
warnings.

LPPD is going to be on the hunt for illegal fireworks this Fourth of July.

On the Fourth of July, many animals become so frightened by the noise and commotion of fireworks that they run from otherwise familiar environments and people, and sadly become lost. They may also suffer devastating or even fatal health effects from the stress. The sudden bright flashes and sounds can cause wild animals to run into roadways, resulting in more car accidents than normal.

Remember, fireworks are illegal in the City of La Porte. It is illegal to possess, transport, ignite, or sell fireworks in the City of La Porte. The La Porte Police Department asks for the entire community’s help in making sure everyone can celebrate the Fourth of July safely. For more information regarding holiday safety, please contact the LPPD at 281-471-2141 and follow us on Facebook at @LaPortePoliceDepartment.

Navigating the brave new world of online dating: Tips from the Homer Police Department.

Listen, It’s a brave new dating world out there and “meeting” people on the internet is handy, and becoming the norm. With that, there are some general rules you ought to follow when courting the love of your life and soul-mate.
1. Stop sending nekid photos of yourself – For the love of all that is just, STOP DOING THIS.
2. Your friend doesn’t really know a Nigerian prince.
3. If you’ve set a time and place to actually meet your forever, and then you get a call saying they’ve been kidnapped and you need to fork over money – bells should be ringing in your head.
Especially if their life is only worth $700 in iTunes gift cards…..🤔

Video: PPD officers take on the challenge tracking down 🤡’s firing off a gun the community.

Here is another case in our series featuring incidents involving the discharge of firearms and the excellent police work done by our officers:

A Pasadena Police Department officer was informed of a firearm discharge in the vicinity of W. Harris and Shaver St. that had occurred earlier in the day; he was also aware of previous discharge of firearm calls from the area and learned of two male subjects walking in the area, believed to be carrying a firearm.

The officer, knowing all this information, took a proactive approach and staged near the area where the discharges of firearms had been reported to the police. The officer called for additional units to assist. As they waited, they eventually observed several subjects matching the description walking towards a wooded area. Shortly after, several officers heard two gunshots sound come from the direction of the wooded area. The officers then observed one of the subjects running from the wooded area onto the streets.

Officers detained all suspects and one of the subjects admitted to shooting the firearm, and to having purchased the gun illegally.
After a thorough investigation, officers found a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine and two AK-style pistols.

The suspect was arrested for Discharge of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.

The Pasadena Police Department views the discharge of firearms as a severe threat and takes immediate action against reckless behavior. Officers often take the initiative and use information from previous calls to formulate a strategy to locate those who threaten our community.

This is just another example of the outstanding job our patrol officers do on a regular basis to ensure the safety of those we serve.

LPPD prioritizes safety for 4th of July celebrations stepping up cracking down on illegal fireworks.

Media Relations Information for June 27, 2024
Public Relations Officer – Assistant Chief Bennie Boles
Office: 281-842-3114

LPPD Touts Safety as Priority for July 4th Holiday

The La Porte Police Department (LPPD) will be stepping up safety efforts for the Fourth of July holiday and weekend. Citizens may see officers on bicycles and utility task vehicles (UTV) throughout the holiday period. Several officers will work the 4th of July Parade that takes place on Thursday, July 4.

As a reminder, the possession and use of fireworks in the city limits are illegal per La Porte municipal ordinance Sec. 38-167. Citizens who chose to violate this ordinance are subject to a fine and/or confiscation of their fireworks. LPPD asks for cooperation in reducing the illegal use of fireworks. The Department’s response to citizen calls about the illegal discharge of fireworks can prevent them from performing other police activities and can also slow emergency response times. Fireworks can also cause anxiety issues for pets and elevate the risk of fire.

The La Porte Police Department asks for the entire community’s help in making sure everyone can celebrate the Fourth of July safely. For more information regarding holiday safety, please contact the LPPD at 281-471-2141 and follow us on Facebook at @LaPortePoliceDepartment.

PPD tips: Keep your eyes on the prize – the safety of yourself and others on the road. Put the phone down and focus on driving.

Using a phone while driving is extremely dangerous. Distracted driving can lead to serious accidents, injuries, and even fatalities. It’s crucial to stay focused on the road and avoid using any devices while driving.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid distracted driving:

* Put Your Phone Away: Keep your phone out of reach to avoid the temptation to check it.
* Use Hands-Free Devices: If you need to take calls, use hands-free devices or Bluetooth.
* Set Up Before You Drive: Set your GPS, music, or any other needs before you start driving.
* Pull Over Safely: If you must use your phone, pull over safely to the side of the road.
* Stay Focused: Keep your attention on driving and the road ahead.

Remember, no message or call is worth risking your life or the lives of others. Stay safe and drive responsibly.

Video: Celebrate responsibly this July 4th by attending the City’s safe, family-friendly 4th Fest, and avoid the risk of fines and ending up in jail.

As July 4th approaches, we hope you consider your family’s and neighbor’s safety.
There are responsible and safe ways to celebrate holidays, but discharging a firearm and igniting fireworks in your backyard is not suggested.
You can attend a legal, family-friendly event at our Annual 4th Fest.
Attending The City of Pasadena’s 4th Fest can save you money because you don’t have to purchase hundreds of dollars of fireworks, and later pay fines when Officers observe you igniting them.
Not to mention spending the night in our municipal jail, or a nearby hospital from injuries you could receive from the fireworks.
Think twice. Make the right decision.

PPD tips to educate your kids on 911 and monitor their deactivated phones to prevent accidental emergency calls.

Our police dispatchers receive multiple accidental 911 calls from children using deactivated cell phones. To help prevent accidental 911 calls from deactivated cell phones used by children, we suggest the following:

📱Teach your child about the importance of 911 and when it should be used. Emphasize that 911 is for emergencies only.

📱Monitor your child’s use of the deactivated phone to ensure they are not making unintended emergency calls.

By taking these steps, you can help reduce the number of accidental 911 calls, ensuring that 911 emergency services phone lines are available for actual emergencies.

Video: PPD let’s keep the Fourth of July celebrations safe and fun by saying no to celebratory gunfire and illegal fireworks.

With the Fourth of July quickly approaching, The Pasadena Police Department wants to ensure everyone enjoys the festivities safely and responsibly.

We’d like to remind our community about the dangers of celebratory gunfire and illegal fireworks. While it may seem like harmless fun, these activities can have serious consequences, putting the lives of our loved ones and neighbors at risk. Stray bullets and fireworks-related accidents can cause injuries, property damage, and even fatalities.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will share several incidents involving individuals who chose to recklessly discharge a firearm and the outcome of their actions.

If you witness anyone discharging a firearm or igniting fireworks, please report it to us immediately.

We also ask that you leave a comment if you have witnessed this illegal activity in your neighborhood in the past so that we can pass this information along to our patrol supervisors and assign additional manpower to specific areas with higher reports of this activity.

Deputy Thornburg saved the day again and was able to pull the kitten out. Deputy Atluri took the kitten home where it will be loved and cared for!
